* FDA warnings 2016 for metformin:
* Metformin is contraindicated (should not be used) in people with borderline kidney function (an estimated kidney GFR of less than 30mL/min/1.73m2).
* Beginning metformin therapy in people with an estimated kidney GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) between 30 to 45 mL/min/1.73m2 is not recommended.
* Discontinue metformin at the time of or before contrast media with iodine is given for imaging proceedures in people with an estimated kidney GFR between 30 to 60 mL/min/1.73m2 and in people with liver disease, alcoholism, or heart failure, or in people who will be given iodine contrast media into arteries; reevaluate kidney GFR 2 days (48 hours) after the proceedure and restart metformin if kidney function is stable.
