WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF THIS DRUG?
By improving glucose and lipid metabolism and reducing lipid peroxidation, carvedilol may offer advantages in patients with diabetes and hypertension in comparison to atenolol. (2128)
Fasting plasma glucose decreased with carvedilol and increased with atenolol. (2128)
Insulin levels decreased with carvedilol and increased with atenolol. (2128)
Triglyceride levels were lower with carvediol than atenalol. (p 0.0001) (2128)
HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels were higher with carvediol than atenolol. (p 0.0001) (2128)
Most beta blockers have adverse effects on metabolism including insulin sensitivity, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism, but third generation vasodilating beta blockers like carvediol may have less adverse metabolic effects than earlier generation beta blockers. (761)
